Gate motor theft suspect arrested: Port Elizabeth

EASTERN CAPE – The theft of gate motors in the Mount Road policing precinct has been a problem since last year (2019). Due to the increase in this type of theft, Mount Road detectives were determined to catch the criminal.
Over several weeks, Detective Sergeant Russell Commons and Detective Constable Micaela Swart visited various businesses and residents in the Newton Park and Cotswold areas in an attempt to trace a suspect from a video footage of one their cases. While driving through the streets, a person fitting the description was spotted in Westview Drive in Mill Park.
The 38-year-old vagrant was arrested and he appeared in court on Wednesday. Riaan Smit will remain in custody until Monday 25 May 2020. The detectives will be probing his involvement to other cases dating back to 2019. Further arrests are expected.
Mount Road Station Commander Brig Marius Groenewald commended the members for their commitment and relentless efforts in making a breakthrough in the theft of gate motors.
