Man behind bars for possession of endangered plants (Conophytum)
POTCHEFSTROOM – A 55-year-old Kenneth James Hendriks, will remain in custody after his first court appearance today in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on a charge of being in possession of endangered plants. He will reappear before the same court on Wednesday, 27 January 2021.
The suspect’s court appearance emanates from his arrest on Monday, 18 January 2021 at 17:00, after police received information that Hendriks was travelling on a bus to Gauteng, with Conophytum plant species. The bus was intercepted, the suspect identified and his luggage searched. Conophytum plants with an estimated value of R80 900-00 was found, thus, Hendriks was arrested.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded the police for their quick response, which resulted in the arrest of the alleged perpetrator. He also urged members of the community to be the eyes and the ears of the police by reporting suspicious criminal activities.
