DESTEA appoints new Head of Communications as it gallops towards the recovery of the Free State economy
The Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism &
Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) hereby notifies members of the media and the broader Free State community that Mr Mojalefa Mphapang has been appointed as Director: Communications and IT with immediate effect. This follows an extensive recruitment and selection process that spanned over several months since the position became vacant.
Following the resignation of the erstwhile Director: Tourism Development and Support, Ms Motsheoa Mahlatsi, the Department resolved to deploy the then Head of Communications, Mr Kgotso Tau, to head the Tourism section. This left the Communication and IT section without a Director. The Department then solicited the service of Messrs. Tiisetso Makhele (Director: Industrial Development) and Lefa Kalane (CFO) to head the Communications and IT sections temporarily.
Mr Mphapang joined the Department in June 2022, having served in various commutations capacities in a number of departments. He served as Communications Officer in the Free State Department of Health from 2004 until 2008. He was then appointed as an Assistant Director for Communications Services at the Free State Provincial Treasury, and worked in that position from 2008 until 2013. He later moved to the Northern Cape Provincial Treasury where he served as the Head of Communications for the period of three years, 2013 until 2015. In 2015, he made his return to the Free State as Communications Manager in the Department Agriculture and Rural Development and Rural Development.
The Communications unit, seeks to ensure strategic and development communications to support the department’s vision of transforming and developing the economy and attaining environmental sustainability.
“The Department seeks to ensure consistent communication between government and the community and the communications unit plays a critical role in that. We welcome the appointment of Mr Mphapang and have confidence that he will serve the department and the entire provincial government diligently and selflessly as he has always done. I wish to thank Messrs. Kalane and Makhele for having selflessly assisted us in time of great need. I wish Mr Mphapang well in his new responsibility”– MEC Makalo Mohale said.
