Minister Creecy to Release Easter Weekend Road Safety Statistics

Pretoria: Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa are set to unveil the Easter Weekend road safety report during a media briefing on Tuesday. This report will detail the outcomes of the Easter Weekend road safety initiatives, as well as the number of road crashes and fatalities recorded during the period, as announced by the Department of Transport.

According to South African Government News Agency, the 2025 Easter Season Road Safety Arrive Alive campaign was launched last month on 20 March and will continue until 2 May 2025. The campaign operates under the theme ‘It begins with Me’ and aims to reduce road fatalities during the high-traffic holiday period through integrated law enforcement and public education strategies.

At a recent media briefing, Creecy noted that preliminary data indicated a decrease in fatalities and crashes across all provinces, with the exception of Mpumalanga. The Western Cape Provincial Government highlighted a slight reduction in road-related fatalities during this year’s Easter weekend. Between 17 and 21 April 2025, the province recorded 22 fatal crashes, resulting in 22 deaths, down from the 26 fatalities reported during the 2024 Easter period.

Furthermore, the Limpopo Provincial Government praised the efforts of those who contributed to a safer Easter weekend. Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba stated, “We are pleased to report that our collaborative efforts to ensure road safety yielded encouraging results, with relatively few fatalities on our roads, especially on the N1.”

The upcoming briefing will be held at the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) office in Pretoria.
