NORTHERN CAPE – The Regional Court in Upington has sentenced a 22-year-old man, Hano Van Rooi to 12 years direct imprisonment for the murder of Jonny Salwan (44) on 18 May 2022. It was reported that the two were drinking together on the night of 22 January 2022 in Saltana Oord near Upington when they ended in an argument over a glass of home brewed beer.

During the altercation the accused (Hano) allegedly stabbed the deceased three times on his chest and ran away.

The docket was assigned to Sergeant Bahedile Nkwadipo who secured an arrest the following day. The bail application was denied in court and Hano remained in custody during the period of trial.

The Acting Station Commander of Upington, Colonel Gert Jobs commended the member for the meticulous investigation of the case. He also alluded that the public must avoid violence and find other ways to resolve confrontation.
