Three nabbed for stock theft in Port Alfred

Police arrested three men who were transporting thirteen (13) goats in Port Alfred on Tuesday morning.

It is alleged that at about 02:30am, members from Port Alfred K9 unit were patrolling the R72, when they spotted a suspicious white Ford bakkie. The movement of animals at the back of a bakkie, drew members’ attention, and drew driver’s attention to stop. Police managed to pull a bakkie off the road, at the corner of Miles and Southwell streets, Port Alfred.

Inside the bakkie, there were three occupants with thirteen (13) goats at the back.

On searching the vehicle, police seized a shotgun with ammunition, and occupants could not give a satisfactory account about the goats.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the goats valued around R48 000 were stolen from a farm in Peddie. The three men were arrested and detained for stock theft and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The goats and a bakkie were seized. An application for the vehicle to be forfeited to the state will follow. The three suspects aged between 32 and 45 are due to appear in the Port Alfred magistrate’s court on Thursday, 10 February 2022 on the said charges.
