Vigilant Detective Sergeant apprehends five robbers

WESTERN CAPE – A hawk-eyed SAPS member arrested five suspects who were involved in a business robbery and attempted murder on Tuesday, 07 June 2022.

A detective sergeant was investigating a docket on hand in Carnarvon Street, Elsies River at around 13:45. He noticed a suspicious vehicle driving with both rear doors open. Two males came running towards the vehicle and jumped in, as this was happening, silver coins fell all over the street. The police officer approached the vehicle, when the suspects saw him, the driver and two passengers jumped out of the vehicle, and one suspect fired shots.

The sergeant fired back, wounding the suspect in the left leg and proceeded to search the vehicle. Two other suspects were in the back seat of the vehicle with a firearm between them. Within minutes, a male approached and reported to the police officer that his mobile shop had just been robbed at gunpoint by the suspects. Five males aged between 21 and 25 were arrested and one gas gun was confiscated.

The suspects will appear in the Goodwood Magistrates court today on the mentioned charges.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 08 June 2022 at approximately 14:00, a group of high school pupils were on their way home when a white Toyota Quantum approached them. The two occupants of the Quantum offered the children a lift, which they declined due to the recent kidnappings in the area. The suspects became verbally aggressive and the children ran. Two males aged 24 and 16 got out of the vehicle and caught a 13-year-old boy, holding a knife to his neck. Community members and the neighbourhood watch came to his rescue. The two suspects were arrested and one okapi knife was seized. They will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s court, once they have been charged.

Furthermore, members attached to Provincial Operation Restore Team arrested a 44-year-old male for dealing in drugs at a premises in NY 101, Qanini Street, Gugulethu on Wednesday, 08 June 2022 at around 17:50. The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s court, once charged.
