The fraud, money laundering, corruption and breach of financing laws case against former member of Parliament Vincent Smith has been postponed to April in the Palm Ridge Specialised Crime Court.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
During an appearance in the court on Tuesday, the state handed over an additional docket to Smith\u2019s legal representatives after charges of tax fraud were added to the charge sheet.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Investigating Directorate spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka explained the addition of the new charges.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe tax fraud charge stem from Smith\u2019s and [his company] Euroblitz\u2019s failure to disclose taxable income from 9 March 2009 and 11 July 2018, totaling R28 million.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Investigating Directorate was able to enrol the further tax charges through the help of the South African Revenue Services,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Smith stands accused of accepting gratifications from BOSASA in the form of security upgrades to his home and accepting money transfers \u2013 through his company Euroblitz \u2013 in exchange for shielding the company from scrutiny while he was chairperson of Parliament\u2019s Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cHe further faces corruption charges by accepting further gratifications from [companies] Waterfall Golf Estate and Clidet 69. The accused also faces charges of accepting cash transferred into his bank account and his company from BOSASA and other people unknown to the state.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cAdditional charges include failure to disclose to Parliament\u2019s Register of Members\u2019 Interest the gratifications, cash deposits and money that was paid to him by Waterfall Golf Estate and Clidet,\u201d Seboka said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Smith is expected to appear in court on 6 April.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
